Mode-locking is a technique used in optics to generate very short Laser pulses, usually in picosecond or even femtosecond lengths. The theoretical basis of this technique is to introduce a fixed phase relationship between different modes in the laser resonator. The resulting laser is called phase-locked laser or mode-locked laser. The interference between these patterns causes the laser to produce a series of pulses. Depending on the nature of the laser, these pulses may have an extremely short duration, even reaching the order of a femtosecond.
